What is PackLead?

This initiative drives interdisciplinary research to develop real-world solutions for sustainable packaging that can be readily adopted across the market. Members of PackLead Innovation focus on applied research related to innovative packaging materials. Including intelligent materials, compostable or recyclable packaging, self-healing properties, and sustainably sourced feedstocks, along with biosensors and eco-friendly barrier coatings. PackLead also supports the exploration of safety assessments, consumer behavior, supply chain impacts, and lifecycle analysis for packaging systems.

In partnership with scientists from the Dan On Food and Beverage Innovation Centre (FBIC) and the Bioproducts Institute (BPI) at the University of British Columbia, the cluster integrates cutting-edge expertise in food packaging, materials science, bioengineering, and bioeconomy to develop these transformative solutions.

A key goal is to mobilize research findings by engaging stakeholders from material providers to consumers, shaping regulatory policies and practices, and bringing new solutions to market.
